Kasvualusta oli kuvataiteilija Mia Rantavaaran kanssa tekemäni yhteisnäyttely, jossa oli videota ja veistosta.
Koko: Huoneen täyttävä installaatio, noin 40m2; yksi pillipalmu noin 20cm x 10cm.
Materiaalit: Video, kierrätetyt pahvilaatikot, mehupillit, kuumaliima.

Substrate was a sculpture and video installation made in collaboration with Mia Rantavaara.
Size: The installation fills a room; here about 40m2; one straw palmtree about 20cm x 10cm.
Materials: Video, recycled cardboard boxes, drinking straws, hot glue.
Tässä teoksessa on avattuja ja avaamattomia laatikoita,
ja niiden päälle hiljalleen kasaantuva rihmasto.
Kaikilla on aina se yks laatikko, jota muuttaa ja muuttaa kämpästä toiseen, ja sitten kun sen kerran avaa niin sieltä se unohtunut hetki tulvahtaa.
Ne muistot rakentaa maiseman, ja siihen maisemaan ne saa myös sulaa –
Teosidea sai alkunsa kesällä 2015 kuvatusta juhannusvideosta, jossa eräs pikkusisko iloitsee, tanssii ja nauraa onnellisessa kesäyön hurmiossa. Kevyessä ja nopeasti kadonneessa hetkessä kuvattu video jäi molempien kuvataiteilijoiden mieleen, ja siitä puhuttiin talven aikana moneen otteeseen. Ymmärsimme pian ihmettelevämme juuri tuota pursuilevaa onnellisuutta, joka videolle oli tallentunut. Yhteisteoksen idea oli syntynyt.
Aloimme etsiä pieniä murtumia onnellisuuden kimaltavasta pinnasta, joista voisi saada kiinni sen sisällä piilevästä ytimestä. Halusimme nähdä välineen vaikutuksen tunteen ohikiitävän hetken näyttämisessä.
Onnellisuuden tallentamisesta syntyy haikea kaipuu menneeseen. Yleensä se yllättää jo onnen hetkellä; takaraivossa koputtaa tunne, että tämä on pian ohi. Kaiken tämän paketoimme näyttelyä varten laatikoihin, joiden annoimme sitten toimia kasvualustana pienille muovipalmuille.
There are closed boxes and open boxes in this artwork,
and there is a slow growth on top of them.
Everybody has that one box, that they move with them from place to place. And then when you finally open it, there it is, that one forgotten moment.
Those memories construct a scenery, and into that scenery they must also dissolve –
The installation takes up the whole gallery space. It consist of cardboard box mountains that are cluttered with small plastic palm trees made out of drinking straws. Some of the box piles reach the ceiling, some are just one box high. The space is dimly lit and has an electric air, because there are short videoloops projected in some of the boxes. The videos are small fragments of memories. Light are installed low, so that they create shadows of the thousands of small drinking straw palm trees.
We were thinking of the fleeting moment of happiness when creating the piece. Trying to find fractures in the glittering surface of happiness, trying to figure out how to show this to the audience. We realised that a recurring thing in happiness is the fear of it soon being over. Clinging to the past was a big theme in our thinking. It will all soon be over.
We packed all this in cardboard boxes, that we let be a substrate to the small palm trees.
